For you to talk about your plans for the future in Russian you need to know a few crucial rules. Unlike English, which often uses auxiliary verbs, Russian relies on conjugations and different forms of verbs to express future actions. Here's a comprehensive guide to understanding and forming the future tense in Russian. This is an important topic when you learn Russian grammar and essential for anyone learning the Russian language. Once you master future tense, make sure to also check out our guide on past tense in Russian to complete your understanding of Russian verb tenses.

1st way of forming future — facts

This is the first and most common way of forming future. For this we will need perfective aspect. If you don't know what aspects are in Russian — watch this video.

Perfective verbs in Russian inherently indicate the completion of an action and are often used to form the simple future tense. These verbs do not have a present tense form. Instead, they directly conjugate to indicate future actions.

Structure:
Subject + conjugated perfective verb

Examples:

  • Я прочитаю книгу. — I will read the book.
  • Они поедут в Москву. — They will go to Moscow.

The highlighted words are perfective and they indicate that the action is done in the future.

Usage:

To express an action that will be completed in the future: "Она напишет письмо." (She will write a letter.) But the main point of this sentence is that the action will be done. Facts are more important than processes, unlike our next one.

2nd way of forming future — processes

For this way of forming future we need imperfective verbs, so opposite of the 1st way. Imperfective verbs, which denote ongoing or repeated actions, form the future tense with the auxiliary verb "быть" (to be) conjugated in the future tense, followed by the imperfective infinitive.

Structure:
Subject + future tense of "быть" + imperfective infinitive

Conjugation of "быть" in the Future Tense:

ЯбудуI will be
ТыбудешьYou will be
Он/она/онобудетHe/She/It will be
МыбудемWe will be
ВыбудетеYou will be
ОнибудутThey will be

Examples:

  • Я буду читать книгу. — I will be reading the book.
  • Они будут работать завтра. — They will be working tomorrow.

As you can see, we must use быть for us to form these sentences.

Usage:

To express an ongoing or repeated action in the future: "Мы будем смотреть фильм." (We will be watching a movie.) Process is more important now, not facts.

3rd way of forming future — preplanned actions

This way of forming future is extremely rare, but that doesn't mean that it's not important. We use it when we know the exact time and place of something that will happen. Typically used for scheduled events. Flights, concerts, etc.

Structure:
Subject + conjugated present tense verb

Examples:

  • Я иду на концерт вечером. — I'm going to a concert in the evening.
  • Они выступают завтра. — They will be performing tomorrow.

Usage:

Whenever you have an action that was planned ahead of time, use this way of forming future.

Nuances in Future tenses

Choosing between perfective and imperfective verbs can change the nuance of the sentence. Perfective verbs focus on the completion of an action, while imperfective verbs emphasize the process or repetition.

Perfective:
Я напишу письмо. — I will write a letter (focusing on the completion)

Imperfective:
Я буду писать письмо. — I will be writing a letter (focusing on the process)

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you form future tense in Russian?

Russian has 3 ways to form future tense: 1) Perfective verbs (conjugated directly): "Я прочитаю книгу" (I will read the book); 2) Imperfective verbs with "быть" + infinitive: "Я буду читать книгу" (I will be reading the book); 3) Present tense for scheduled events: "Я иду на концерт вечером" (I'm going to a concert tonight). Perfective focuses on completion, imperfective focuses on the process.

What is the difference between perfective and imperfective in future tense?

Perfective future ("Я напишу письмо") emphasizes the completion of an action—the fact that it will be done. Imperfective future ("Я буду писать письмо") emphasizes the process or ongoing nature of the action. Use perfective for completed actions, imperfective for ongoing or repeated actions. Both are correct, but they convey different nuances!

How do you conjugate быть in future tense?

The future tense conjugation of "быть" (to be) is: Я буду, Ты будешь, Он/Она/Оно будет, Мы будем, Вы будете, Они будут. This is used with imperfective infinitives to form future tense: "Я буду работать" (I will be working), "Они будут учиться" (They will be studying). Remember: "быть" is conjugated, and the main verb stays in infinitive form!

When do you use present tense to express future in Russian?

Use present tense for future when talking about scheduled, pre-planned events with a specific time or place. Examples: "Я иду на концерт вечером" (I'm going to a concert tonight), "Они выступают завтра" (They will perform tomorrow). This is less common than perfective/imperfective future but is natural for flights, concerts, meetings, and other scheduled events.

Do all Russian verbs have future tense?

Yes, all Russian verbs can express future, but perfective verbs don't have a present tense—they only have past and future. Imperfective verbs have all three tenses (past, present, future). Perfective verbs like "прочитать" (to read completely) conjugate directly for future: "Я прочитаю". Imperfective verbs like "читать" (to read) use "быть" + infinitive: "Я буду читать".

What's the easiest way to learn Russian future tense?

Start with perfective future—it's simpler! Just conjugate the perfective verb like you would a present tense verb. Then learn "быть" conjugation (буду, будешь, будет, etc.) for imperfective future. Practice with common verbs: "Я сделаю" (I will do), "Я буду делать" (I will be doing). Focus on understanding perfective vs imperfective aspect first—this is the key to mastering Russian future tense!

Can you use future tense with all verbs?

Yes! All Russian verbs can be used in future tense. Perfective verbs form future by direct conjugation ("Я куплю" - I will buy). Imperfective verbs form future with "быть" + infinitive ("Я буду покупать" - I will be buying). Some verbs only exist in perfective or imperfective form, so you'll use the appropriate construction. Both forms are grammatically correct—choose based on whether you want to emphasize completion or process!

How do you say 'I will' in Russian?

To say "I will" in Russian, use: 1) Perfective verb conjugation: "Я сделаю" (I will do), "Я пойду" (I will go); or 2) "Я буду" + imperfective infinitive: "Я буду делать" (I will be doing), "Я буду идти" (I will be going). The choice depends on whether you want to emphasize the completed action (perfective) or the ongoing process (imperfective). Both are correct!
